Hosting the Family Holiday in a Big Hocking Hills Cabin

How to choose group lodging, plan beds and meals, check accessibility and keep a multigenerational holiday on budget.

The short version

Hocking Hills has real options for big family holidays. Explore Hocking Hills, the regional tourism site, lists group-friendly lodging with stated maximum capacities from 12 guests up to 194. The hard part is not finding a big cabin. It is matching beds, bathrooms, stairs and kitchen space to the people who will actually be there.

This guide covers how to choose the right kind of group lodging, how to plan sleeping space, what to ask about accessibility, how to feed a crowd in a rental kitchen, what mixed ages can do in December, and how to split the bill without hard feelings.

Big cabin, lodge or a cluster of cabins

Large-group lodging in the area comes in three basic shapes. Each suits a different kind of family.

The examples come from the operators' Explore Hocking Hills listings and the state park lodge's cabin page, checked October 30, 2026. They are examples, not recommendations; we have not stayed at them.

Explore Hocking Hills has an availability search that filters by group size, bedroom count and amenities such as accessibility, game rooms, indoor pools and hot tubs. Its group-friendly page also suggests contacting properties early, since large-group stays fill up and may carry minimum stays or event policies. Sleeping-space planning

"Sleeps 20" is a maximum, not a promise that 20 adults will sleep well. Before you book, build a bed chart.

  1. List every guest by name. Note age, any mobility limits, couples, light sleepers and anyone who needs a room near a bathroom.
  2. Ask the owner for the exact bed list. You want each room's bed sizes, which rooms are lofts or bunk rooms, and which "beds" are sofa sleepers. Many group listings on Explore Hocking Hills link to floor plans.
  3. Count bathrooms against people. Pool House Lodge, for example, lists five bathrooms for up to 20 guests. Morning showers are where big-cabin plans break down.
  4. Put older guests and toddlers on the main floor. Ask which bedrooms need stairs to reach.
  5. Check whether extra sleepers are allowed. Some owners cap headcount for septic or occupancy reasons, so ask before you pack an air mattress.

Two state park cabins can beat one big rental

The state park lodge says its standard two-bedroom cabins sleep 6, with a queen in one room and a bunk bed plus a twin in the other. Two or three cabins together give each household its own bathroom and kitchen. The lodge lists a two-night minimum for direct bookings.

Accessibility questions to ask

If a grandparent uses a walker or wheelchair, do not rely on an "accessible" filter alone. Ask specific questions and get answers in writing.

  • Is there step-free entry from the parking area to the door? Is the path paved, gravel or wooden deck, and is it cleared of snow and ice?
  • Is there a bedroom and a full bathroom on the entry level?
  • Does the bathroom have a roll-in or walk-in shower and grab bars?
  • How wide are the doorways? Measure the wheelchair or walker and compare.
  • Is the hot tub or deck reachable without stairs?
  • Can a car pull up close to the door for drop-off?

Some listings spell this out. Pool House Lodge's listing names ramps, a wheelchair-accessible bedroom suite and a roll-in shower with grab bars. The state park lodge lists two ADA-accessible two-bedroom cabins that each sleep up to 5.

Activities matter too. ODNR lists the Ash Cave Gorge trail as a quarter-mile, easy, wheelchair-accessible trail. The Santa Train sells wheelchair tickets, but the railway says space is very limited and asks those riders to arrive 45 to 60 minutes early.

Need a cabin for the whole family?

Tell Hocking Cabins your dates and headcount, how many bedrooms you need, and whether you need an accessible cabin, a game room or a pet-friendly cabin. Your request goes to local owners whose places look like a fit.

Tell us your dates and we'll match you with a cabin

Hocking Cabins is our sister site. Its request form shares your trip only with up to three participating local lodging operators that look like a match. Sending a request is not a booking, and there's no obligation to book.

Meal planning for a crowd

A big-group holiday runs on a meal plan. Assign it before anyone leaves home.

Give each household a meal

Divide the trip by meals, not by dishes. One household owns Friday dinner, another owns Christmas breakfast, and so on. Each team shops, cooks and cleans for its meal. It spreads the work and stops arguments over the grocery bill.

Ask about the kitchen before you plan the menu

  • How many ovens, and what size? Pool House Lodge lists double ovens and two dishwashers, but that is unusual.
  • Is there a second refrigerator or a garage fridge? A holiday crowd fills one fast.
  • How many place settings, chairs and seats at the table? You may need to bring folding chairs.
  • Is there an outdoor grill, and is it usable in winter?

Shopping

Logan has a Walmart Supercenter at 12910 State Route 664 S, listed as open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, and a Kroger at 31550 Chieftain Dr. Neither store had posted 2026 Christmas hours when we checked. Do the big shop before December 24. Our cabin arrival supply run list covers what to buy on the way in.

Activities for mixed ages in December

The best family holiday activities work for a four-year-old and an eighty-year-old at once. Here is what we could confirm for December 2026, with its official hours.

The zip line is the one people ask about. Hocking Hills Canopy Tours says it is open mid-March through November, with a minimum age of 10 and a weight range of 70 to 250 pounds, so save it for a spring trip.

For a winter walk with kids, our Old Man's Cave trail guide explains the route and its stairs, which helps you decide who goes and who waits at the cabin. ODNR says many park trails are one-way and asks visitors to stay on marked trails and keep young children close.

Indoor time at the cabin

Plan for at least one weather day. A stack of family board games, a puzzle on the dining table and a movie night cover most of it. If your cabin has a game room, ask what's in it before you pack duplicates.

Pack ice cleats for everyone who plans to hike. Our Hocking Hills packing list covers the rest.

Splitting the cost fairly

Money is where family trips get tense. Settle the method before anyone pays a deposit.

Three common ways to split

Cost-splitting methods for a group cabin
MethodHow it worksFair when
By householdTotal divided evenly among family unitsHouseholds are similar in size
By bedroomEach bedroom pays a share; couples split their roomRooms are similar; kids share with parents
By adultAdults pay full share; kids pay a set fraction or nothingSome households have many kids, others none
  1. Name one organizer. One person books, holds the paperwork and talks to the owner.
  2. Collect the deposit share up front. The organizer should not carry the whole deposit for months.
  3. Write down the cancellation terms. Share the owner's refund policy with everyone before they pay, so no one is surprised.
  4. Keep groceries separate. If each household buys for its own assigned meal, you only split the lodging.
  5. Settle up within a week. Send one summary with the total, each share and how to pay.
