Fishing in Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills isn't known as a fishing destination the way Lake Erie is, but the region has solid freshwater fishing across several lakes and the Hocking River. Here's what to know.

Where to Fish

Lake Logan State Park

The best fishing lake in the immediate area. Stocked with northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, and saugeye. The lake has a marina that rents pontoons, kayaks, paddle boards, and pedal boats. Day-use park with scenic picnic areas. About 10 minutes from the main Hocking Hills trailheads.

Lake Hope State Park

A smaller, quieter lake about 30 minutes from the park. Good panfish and bass fishing. Less crowded than Lake Logan. Swimming beach, hiking trails, and campgrounds on-site. The surrounding Zaleski State Forest adds backcountry atmosphere.

Hocking River

The mid and upper portions of the Hocking River have an impressive smallmouth bass population, plus channel catfish, white crappie, quillback, sauger, and more. Both canoe liveries (Hocking Hills Adventures and Adventure Pro Outdoors) are dog-friendly and can combine a fishing trip with a float. Kayak fishing on the Hocking River is growing in popularity — several quiet stretches offer excellent access to bass habitat.

Rose Lake

A small lake within the state park trail system, accessible by hiking from Old Man's Cave. Trout are stocked in Rose Lake, making it a unique option in the region. More of a hiking-to-fish experience than a drive-up lake.

Licensing

Ohio requires a fishing license for anyone 16 and older. Kids 15 and under can fish without a license — making this a great free activity for families. Licenses can be purchased online through the ODNR website or at local retailers including Walmart in Logan. A daily tourist license is available for out-of-state visitors.

No fishing in the state park waterways. The creeks, waterfalls, and streams within Hocking Hills State Park are closed to fishing (and swimming). Fish at the lakes and the Hocking River, not inside the park trails.

Seasons and Tips

Spring and fall are the best fishing seasons. Spring brings aggressive pre-spawn bass. Fall cooling triggers feeding activity. Summer fishing works best in early morning or late evening when water temperatures are lower. Winter ice fishing is possible on Lake Logan in cold years, though conditions are inconsistent.

For guided fishing trips, local outfitters can arrange trips on the Hocking River and area lakes. Ask your cabin host for recommendations — many know the local fishing spots better than any guidebook.
