Trick-or-treat options
Hocking Halloween Campout
The state park's annual Halloween weekend is the single best kids' event in the region: campers decorate their sites, there are hayrides through the campground, a costume parade at the amphitheater, pumpkin decorating for kids 12 and under at the Old Man's Cave shelter house, and an evening trick-or-treat loop through the sites. Registered campers and cottage guests get in free. The naturalist's "Haunted Hocking" ghost program at Ash Cave is also part of the weekend — it's real ghost stories, so the park itself tells parents to decide whether it's right for their kids. 2026 dates weren't posted at press time; check the park calendar and book a site the day they open.
Jack O' Lantern Jubilee
Logan's downtown Halloween evening — treat walk through the shops, costume contest, scavenger hunt, photo booth, dancing — usually a late-October Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. around Worthington Park. Free. It's small-town Halloween done right and it's over by bedtime.
Trails kids finish
- Ash Cave. Half a mile, flat, paved to the recess cave. The cave is enormous — the largest in Ohio — and the echo is the whole attraction for anyone under ten. Stroller-friendly to the cave.
- Rock House. Short but steep, with stairs and a scramble into the "cave" (really a tunnel through the cliff with window openings). Ages 6 and up who like climbing. Bring a flashlight for drama; you don't need it for safety.
- Cedar Falls. A half-mile down to the falls and back up. Lots of stairs. In a dry October the falls are a trickle, so set expectations.

Keeping the spooky stuff age-appropriate
The region's folklore ranges from mild (the hermit who lived in Old Man's Cave) to not-for-bedtime (the Moonville Tunnel stories). A good rule: tell the local legends as history during the day — "an outlaw gang really did hide in Rock House" — and save the ghost versions for the adults after the kids are down. The Bigfoot angle is the safe middle ground; every kid loves it and nobody has nightmares.
The cabin matters more than usual
With kids, the cabin is half the trip. Look for a real fire pit (s'mores are non-negotiable), a game room or at least a big open living area for the rainy afternoon, bunk rooms so the kids are together and the adults aren't, and a location within 15 minutes of Ash Cave and Old Man's Cave so nobody spends the weekend in a car seat.
