You can see a lot of Hocking Hills in one day if you plan your route, time your arrival, and don't try to do everything. Here's a tested itinerary that hits the highlights without turning your day into a death march.
Before You Leave
Download offline maps — there's no cell service in most of the park. Pack water, snacks, and a picnic lunch (there are no restaurants inside the park). Wear sturdy shoes with grip. Bring a rain jacket regardless of the forecast.
Morning: 8 AM – Noon
Stop 1: Ash Cave (8:00 AM – 8:45 AM)
Start here. The parking lot is rarely full this early, and the flat, paved quarter-mile trail to the cave takes about 40 minutes round trip. You'll see the largest recess cave in Ohio — 700 feet wide, 100 feet deep — with a seasonal waterfall. It's the easiest trail in the park and one of the most dramatic. Starting easy builds momentum without burning energy.
Stop 2: Cedar Falls (9:00 AM – 9:50 AM)
A 5-minute drive from Ash Cave. The half-mile trail descends via stairs to the park's largest waterfall — 50 feet of cascading water framed by hemlock trees and wooden bridges. Moderate difficulty. About 40 minutes. Use the smaller parking lot for modern restrooms.
Stop 3: Old Man's Cave (10:15 AM – 11:45 AM)
Another short drive. This is the park's signature experience — a 1 to 1.5 mile loop through the gorge with the Upper Falls, Lower Falls, Devil's Bathtub, Sphinx Head, and the namesake cave. About 60-90 minutes depending on your pace. The visitor center has the best restrooms, snack machines, and educational exhibits. Arriving by 10 AM on a weekday usually means manageable crowds; weekends will be busier.
Midday: Noon – 1:30 PM
Lunch Break
Picnic at one of the trailhead picnic areas (tables and grills are available at most), or drive into Logan (about 15 minutes) for a sit-down meal. Hocking Hills Coffee Emporium is the closest option near the park for a quick lunch. 58 West or The Feed in Logan offer more substantial meals. If you packed a cooler, the picnic area at Old Man's Cave is the most convenient.
Afternoon: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Pick one of these based on your energy level and interests:
Option A: Rock House Moderate
The only true cave in the park — a 200-foot-long chamber with window-like openings. About 45 minutes. A 15-minute drive from Old Man's Cave. Less crowded than the morning stops.
Option B: Conkle's Hollow Moderate to Difficult
Two options: the flat gorge-floor trail (easier, 30 minutes) or the Rim Trail (2.5 miles, panoramic overlooks, 1.5 hours). The Rim Trail is the single best overlook in the park — especially in fall. No dogs allowed (State Nature Preserve).
Option C: Non-Hiking Alternative
Drive to Nelsonville (15 min) for the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway if a train is running, or visit the Hocking Hills Winery for a tasting and wood-fired pizza on the patio. Or drive to Rockbridge to see Ohio's largest natural bridge (100+ feet long).
Evening: 4:00 PM Onward
Head to a winery or brewery for the evening. Brewery 33 has a beer garden with fire pit. Hocking Hills Winery has a patio with live music on weekends. 58 West in Logan does food, wine, beer, and spirits all in one spot.
If you're staying for a clear night, the John Glenn Astronomy Park runs free stargazing programs on Friday and Saturday evenings from March through November, starting 30 minutes after sunset. Reserve a free parking pass at registration.jgap.org.
The key to a good day trip: Don't try to see all seven hiking areas. Three to four is the sweet spot. Arrive before 9 AM. Front-load the hiking, save the driving and dining for afternoon. And accept that you'll want to come back — which is the point.
Turn Your Day Trip into a Weekend
