Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. In the Hocking Hills that usually means a quiet, cold, early-sunset holiday where the meal is the main plan. Settle where you will eat first, buy groceries before the holiday rush, and build the rest of the day around a short walk in the park.
This guide is about food and activities. For the broader mood of the month, see our November quiet-season guide.
Decide the meal first
You have four realistic options. Pick one before anything else, because it drives your shopping and timing.
- Cook it yourself. This gives you the most control and is the easiest to scale up. Ask your host in advance what the kitchen includes (oven size, roasting pan, serving dishes), because small cabin kitchens are often built for weekend cooking, not a turkey for ten.
- Reserve a lodge buffet. Ohio State Park lodges have offered reservation-only Thanksgiving buffets in recent years. Reporting from 2023 listed a Hocking Hills State Park Lodge buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and reporting from 2025 listed the Hocking Hills Lodge & Conference Center buffet on Thursday, November 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hours changed between years and we could not find a 2026 listing, so contact the lodge directly and ask whether it is offering a buffet this year.
- Find a restaurant that is open. Many small-town restaurants close or run reduced menus on Thanksgiving, and many that open take reservations only. Check each place's website or Facebook page, or call, before you count on it.
- Mix. A common compromise is to cook the sides and pies at the cabin and skip the turkey, or to eat out at midday and keep dinner light.
Our local directory lists Logan-area restaurants, wineries and shops; use it as a starting list and verify holiday hours with each business.
Time the grocery run
Logan has Walmart, Kroger and Save A Lot, according to our Logan visitor guide. Store hours on and around the holiday can differ from normal, and the shelves that matter most (turkey, cranberries, canned pumpkin) can run low in the days before. Plan to shop by Tuesday or Wednesday, and buy anything perishable that you will not cook on Thursday so you are not forced out again. Our grocery guide and 30-minute supply-run list help you decide what to buy before you lose signal.
Cooking for a group or with kids
If you are cooking, simplify. Pick two or three dishes that can be made ahead and reheated, and use disposable roasting pans if your rental's cookware is limited. Ask your host before you arrive about the oven size, number of burners and whether there is a meat thermometer. Assign dishes to guests so that you are not shopping for everything. If you want a dessert you do not have to bake, the directory lists Country Lane Cakes, a custom cake and baking business that takes orders through Facebook; ask well ahead whether it can handle a holiday order.
Whichever option you choose, write down your plan for leftovers. Cabin refrigerators can be small, so bring containers, foil and zip bags, and check what the kitchen offers.
Take a short walk before or after the meal
Hocking Hills State Park trails and picnic areas are open from about a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The park's visitor center at the Old Man's Cave parking lot is normally open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but the department's page lists no holiday hours, so call the park office (740-385-6842, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) before you plan on it.
Because sunset comes before 5:30 p.m. in late November, schedule the walk in the morning or early afternoon. The department notes trails are typically icy in winter and recommends ice cleats and proper footwear. For an easy option, it lists the Ash Cave Gorge trail as about a quarter mile, easy and wheelchair accessible. That makes it a good pre-dinner stretch for a mixed-age group, as long as the surface is not icy.
Low-key things to do on the day
- Stargazing. Our November guide says John Glenn Astronomy Park programs continue on Friday and Saturday evenings through November. The state park says you must register for parking to attend an astronomy program, so check the schedule and registration.
- A scenic train, if one runs. The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway runs regular trains May through October and special trains on other dates, including a Santa Train and a New Year's Eve train. We did not find a Thanksgiving Day train, so check the railway's own site. Our railway guide has details.
- A drive. Bare trees make rock formations and long views easier to see. Fill up first and keep your phone charged.
- Cabin time. Board games, a fire if your rental allows one, and pie are a legitimate itinerary.
Black Friday and the weekend
The day after Thanksgiving is the day to head into town. Logan's Welcome Center on SR 664 lists hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and the Gallery on Main shop at 65 W. Main Street lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed Sunday. Those are regular hours, so confirm any holiday changes. Our local directory also lists the Wind Chime Shop & Candle Co, which has a year-round Christmas shop, the Hocking Hills Store, and Gifts That Give Back, a fair-trade shop on Main Street. For ideas on what to bring home, see our local makers guide.
Week-before checklist
- Two weeks out: reserve a buffet or restaurant, or confirm your kitchen equipment.
- Tuesday or Wednesday: do the main grocery run and fill the gas tank.
- Wednesday night: download offline maps.
- Thursday: walk in the morning, eat mid-afternoon, and plan to be off trails by dusk.
- Friday: use the day for a town stop or a second easy walk.
If the weather turns wet, shift the plan to indoor stops and a long afternoon at the cabin.
