Christmas Events Near Hocking Hills 2026: Santa Train, Lights and Markets

The 2026 holiday calendar at a glance

The biggest Christmas draws near Hocking Hills in 2026 are the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway Santa Train out of Nelsonville, the Downtown Logan Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 5, and the free Christmas in Ash Cave walk on Saturday, December 12.

Below is every holiday event we could confirm on an official page as of October 30, 2026. Where an organizer has not posted 2026 dates yet, we say so and point you to the page to watch. Nothing here is guessed from last year.

The Santa Train from Nelsonville

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway has run a Santa Train for close to 50 years, according to the railway's own train-rides page. It is the region's anchor holiday event, and the railway warns that the trains tend to sell out.

Dates and departure times

The railway's Santa Train page says rides begin Saturday, November 28, and run Thursday through Sunday through December 20. The page does not print a year. Those weekdays line up with the 2026 calendar, but confirm on the booking calendar before you plan travel around a specific train.

• Saturdays and Sundays: departures at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
• 6 p.m. evening trains: November 28 and December 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19.
• Length: about two hours, round trip from Nelsonville to East Logan and back through the Hocking River valley.

What it costs and what you get

Fares listed on the railway's page (checked Oct 30, 2026): adults 13 and up $26, children 3 to 12 $21, seniors 60+ and military $22, and wheelchair tickets $22. Children under 3 ride free on a lap.

Coaches are heated and decorated. Santa walks through the train to visit each child, and kids get a candy cane afterward. You may bring soft drinks and food aboard.

How to book

1. Open the Santa Train page and use the Book Now button, or call reservations at 855-32-DEPOT (855-326-3768).
2. Pick a departure. Weekend afternoon and evening trains are the obvious targets for out-of-town families, so book those first.
3. Plan to arrive at the Nelsonville Depot, 33 West Canal Street, at least 30 minutes early. Your confirmation email is not your ticket; you pick up paper tickets at the depot.
4. If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair, buy a wheelchair ticket. Space is very limited, and the railway asks those riders to arrive 45 to 60 minutes early.

Downtown Logan Christmas Parade

This is a midday parade, which makes it easy to pair with something else. A family could watch the parade in Logan, then drive to Nelsonville for a 2 p.m. Santa Train if one is running that day. Leave a buffer. The railway says trains leave on schedule and asks riders to be there 30 minutes ahead.

Santa appears in the parade, so if your kids only get one Santa visit this year, this one is free.

Christmas in Ash Cave

Ash Cave is a good fit for a mixed group. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources lists the Ash Cave Gorge trail as a quarter-mile, easy route that is wheelchair accessible. That is the path the lighted walk follows to the cave.

The event listing tells visitors to come bundled for the weather, and that is the right call. The event runs into the evening, and ODNR notes that park trails are typically icy in winter.

Markets, shopping and smaller events

Hocking Hills Book Fair (two 2026 dates)

Explore Hocking Hills lists two book fairs this season, both tagged as free, indoor and family friendly:

• Saturday, November 21, 2026, noon to 6 p.m., at 20020 State Route 664, Logan. That is the address of the Hocking Hills State Park Lodge.
• Saturday, December 12, 2026, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 8000 Dairy Lane, Athens.

The December fair falls on the same day as Christmas in Ash Cave. An Athens morning and an Ash Cave evening is a workable day if you don't mind the driving.

Christmas on the Farm at Fox's High Rock Farm

Fox's High Rock Farm in Logan is selling tickets for Christmas on the Farm 2026, its fourth year. The ticket page lists Santa visits and stories, holiday games, a craft, time with the farm animals, and hot chocolate, popcorn and cookies, all included with admission.

The page we checked says there are multiple dates and times but did not list them or the price. Open the farm's ticket page to see current sessions.

Holiday Treasure Hunt: 2026 details not posted

In 2025, Explore Hocking Hills ran a Holiday Treasure Hunt from November 1 to December 12. Shoppers collected stamps from six participating local shops for a chance at a weekend getaway. As of October 30, 2026, the event page still shows the 2025 version. Check the Treasure Hunt page in November.

North Pole Nelsonville: 2026 date not posted

Nelsonville's annual North Pole Nelsonville celebration and evening parade, hosted by the Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce, was held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, according to the City of Nelsonville's calendar. The parade stepped off at 6 p.m. and circled the Public Square.

Neither the city calendar nor the Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce site listed a 2026 date when we checked. Watch the chamber site and the city's calendar.

Light displays within a drive

We did not find a drive-through light show inside Hocking County on the official lists we checked. These are the confirmed options within a day trip.

Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The zoo's Wildlights page lists the 2026 season as November 20, 2026, through January 3, 2027. Wildlights runs 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Wildlights is included with regular zoo admission. The zoo's hours and rates page lists non-Franklin County adult (10–59) tickets starting at $34.95, children 3–9 from $27.95, and $12 parking (checked Oct 30, 2026). The same page says the zoo is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, so don't plan a December 25 visit. The zoo is in Powell, north of Columbus, so this works best on your drive in or out.

Fairfield County Festival of Lights, Lancaster: 2026 dates not posted

Visit Fairfield County describes this display at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds as running every evening from Thanksgiving Day through Christmas Day. Its listing gives hours of 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with admission of $10 per vehicle.

That listing does not state a year, so treat it as the usual pattern rather than a confirmed 2026 schedule. The fairgrounds are at 157 E. Fair Avenue in Lancaster. Check Visit Fairfield County before you go.

Ohio Holiday Lights Trail

Ohio's tourism office published a statewide Holiday Lights Trail map for 2025. Its southeast Ohio stops included Shine On Chillicothe and Wellston's OHillCo Lights. A 2026 version was not posted when we checked, so use the 2025 map only as a list of places to look up.

How to plan a holiday weekend around these events

December 5 and December 12 are the two strongest weekends. Each pairs a free headline event with Santa Train departures, if the railway's posted pattern holds.

1. Book the train first. It is the one item here that sells out. Once you have a departure, everything else can flex around it.
2. Book your cabin second. Ask about minimum stays early, since many cabins set them for weekends and holidays. The state park's own cabins require a two-night minimum on direct bookings.
3. Add the free events. Logan's parade is midday. Christmas in Ash Cave runs 5 to 7 p.m. Neither official listing mentions a reservation.
4. Check roads the morning you drive. ODOT's OHGO site and app show live road conditions, incidents and traffic cameras across Ohio. Our winter driving guide covers the back roads into the parks.
5. Confirm dining hours. The state park lodge's Rock House Restaurant requires reservations for dinner and posts no Christmas hours yet. Our off-season what's-open checklist helps you call ahead efficiently.

Looking past Christmas: New Year's Eve on the train

The railway also runs a New Year's Eve Train & Fireworks. Its page lists a December 31 departure at 10:30 p.m., about two hours to East Logan and back, with a stop around midnight for fireworks. The page does not print a year.

Listed fares (checked Oct 30, 2026): Pizza & Pop adult $38, child $27, senior or military $34; Wine & Cheese adult (21+) $40, senior or military $36. Reservations are required, outside alcohol is not allowed, and the railway says this train is not wheelchair accessible because of its antique equipment.
