What's Open in Hocking Hills Off-Season: A Pre-Trip Checklist

Trip Planning · October 12, 2026 · 6 min read

The Hocking Hills is a seasonal destination. The trails stay open, but many outfitters, trains, tasting rooms and shops cut their days or close after the fall rush. The fix is not a list of hours, which goes stale quickly. It is a repeatable way to confirm what is open before you spend an hour driving to find a locked door.

Why off-season trips go wrong

Hours that are accurate in July can be wrong by December, and a single "closed for the season" sign can wreck a day plan. Look at how much already varies in the sources we use:

None of that is a problem if you know it in advance. The checklist below makes sure you do.

The eight-step checklist

  1. Trails and park services. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says Hocking Hills trails and picnic areas are open from about a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset, and that trails are typically icy in winter. Its page lists a park office at 740-385-6842, staffed weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sources we checked do not say whether trailhead restrooms or drinking water are available in winter, so ask the park office rather than assume.
  2. Visitor centers. The state park visitor center is listed as open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a note that hours can change seasonally. The Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center in Logan lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Gallery on Main in downtown Logan lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed Sunday.
  3. Outfitters (zipline, canoe, horse, ATV). Read the booking page for the days you want, then ask three questions: Are you running on that date? What happens if it rains or freezes? Is there a minimum group size or a lead time?
  4. The scenic railway. Check the railway's booking page for your exact date. Regular trains are a summer-to-October feature, and winter dates, if any, are for special trains.
  5. Wineries, breweries and tasting rooms. Confirm both the tasting hours and whether food is served. Some venues are weekend-only. Our tasting route guide shows how to group stops.
  6. Restaurants. Check the restaurant's website or social page for posted hours and holiday notices, then call if you are traveling on a Monday, Tuesday or holiday. For ideas, see where to eat near Hocking Hills.
  7. Shops and markets. Small shops often keep hours on Facebook only. If your plan depends on a market, check that day's schedule. The Athens Farmers Market, for example, lists Saturdays year-round and Wednesdays only from spring through November.
  8. Fuel, groceries and basics. Fill the tank and buy groceries in Logan, where Walmart, Kroger and Save A Lot operate, before you head to remote cabins. See our grocery guide.

Where to verify, in order of reliability

  1. The official website or booking page for that business or agency.
  2. The business's own social page, especially for small shops, farms and food stops that post daily changes.
  3. A phone call. This is the most reliable way to confirm same-week hours, and the only reliable way to ask about weather policies.
  4. Third-party listings and map apps. Treat these as hints, not confirmation. Their hours are often not updated by seasonal owners.

Our own local directory describes what businesses offer, and for many of them the best link is their Facebook page for current hours. That is a sign of how fast small-business hours change here.

Three questions to ask on every call"Are you open on [date] at [time]?" "Are those your normal winter hours?" "If the weather is bad, do you still run, or should I call that morning?"

Signs a stop may be closed for the season

None of these means a place is closed, but any of them is a reason to try another route to confirm. Holiday weeks deserve extra care, because even businesses that stay open all winter often shorten or skip days around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.

Ask about the weather policy

Outdoor operators make their own calls about cold, rain, wind and ice, and the policy differs by business. Before you pay a deposit, ask whether you will be refunded or rebooked if they cancel, who decides, and by what time on the day you will find out. Put that time in your phone so you can switch to a backup without losing the morning.

A simple timeline

Build a fallback into the plan

Choose one stop per day that does not depend on seasonal hours, such as a short state park walk or a drive. Pair it with an indoor backup like a visitor center or a downtown Logan stroll. Our rainy day guide and winter warm-stops itinerary are built for this.

The bottom line

The Hocking Hills is rewarding in the off-season, and the trails are quieter. The only mistake is assuming a summer schedule still applies. Confirm the stops your day depends on, keep a backup, and leave time to adapt.
