Hocking Hills anchors a weekend easily, but if you're staying for three or more days — or if rain shuts down the trails — having a radius of day trip options keeps the trip from stalling. Here's what's within an hour's drive, organized by distance and type.
Nelsonville — 15 Minutes
The closest town of substance to the state park, Nelsonville is worth more than a drive-through. The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway departs from the historic depot — fall foliage trains run Thursday through Sunday in October, Halloween trains on October 23, 24, 30, and 31, and steam specials November 7–8. Stuart's Opera House, an 1879 performance venue, hosts live music and events. The town square has locally owned shops and restaurants. Rocky Brands (formerly Rocky Shoes & Boots) is headquartered here. It's a genuine small Ohio town, not a tourist construct.
Moonville Tunnel — 30–40 Minutes
The Moonville Rail Trail and its landmark brick-lined tunnel are about 30–40 minutes south of Old Man's Cave. The 2.7-mile out-and-back to King's Hollow Tunnel is the most atmospheric hike within the radius — especially on foggy fall mornings or after dark. Combine with Lake Hope State Park (15 minutes from the tunnel) for a full-day excursion into Vinton County.
Lancaster — 30 Minutes
The Fairfield County seat, Lancaster sits about 30 minutes northwest of the state park. Points of interest:
- Sherman House Museum: Birthplace of Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman and his brother, Senator John Sherman (of the Sherman Antitrust Act). Small museum, historical significance.
- Covered bridges: Fairfield County has several remaining covered bridges — a scenic driving loop through the countryside.
- Dining and shopping: More restaurant options than Logan, with a walkable downtown square.
Athens — 40 Minutes
The Ohio University college town, 40 minutes southeast, is the cultural and food hub of the region. Independent restaurants, craft breweries, bookstores, and a campus that gives the town genuine energy. The OU campus itself is worth a walk — hilly and architecturally varied. If you need a change of pace from cabin cooking and trail hiking, Athens is the answer.
Circleville — 45 Minutes (October Only)
The Circleville Pumpkin Show is one of Ohio's largest and most distinctive festivals, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors over four days in mid-October. Giant pumpkin weigh-offs, pumpkin-themed food (pumpkin donuts, pumpkin pie, pumpkin burgers, pumpkin everything), parades, and carnival rides. It's loud, crowded, and genuinely fun. The festival typically runs Wednesday through Saturday of the third week in October. Circleville is about 45 minutes northwest of the state park. Go for the experience, eat something ridiculous, and come back to the cabin for the contrast.
Other Options in the Radius
- Burr Oak State Park (45 minutes east): Another state park with a lodge, lake, and trail system. Less dramatic geology than Hocking Hills but good hiking and a more traditional state park lodge experience.
- Tar Hollow State Park (40 minutes southwest): A large state forest with a 21-mile backpacking trail. Less developed, more remote, good for experienced hikers.
- Wayne National Forest (varies): Ohio's only national forest sprawls across the southeastern part of the state. Wildcat Hollow (30 minutes east) is the closest designated hiking area.
The rainy day move: When the trails are too wet or the weather pushes you indoors, drive to Athens for lunch and a bookstore visit, or catch a matinee movie in Lancaster. Save the cabin evening for when the weather clears — fire pit, hot tub, and the post-rain stargazing that follows clearing skies.
