Hocking Hills in September 2026: Events, Weather & Crowd Strategy
September 2026 brings the Hocking Hills Trail Run, county fair, Glass Pumpkin Fest, arts events and the first transition toward fall. Here's how to plan around the calendar.
September is the hinge month in Hocking Hills. Summer heat starts easing, festival season gets unusually busy, and the first hints of fall arrive before October's biggest foliage crowds.
Major September 2026 events
Feast in the Forest — September 5
The official Hocking Hills calendar lists Feast in the Forest for Saturday, September 5.
Hocking Hills Trail Run — September 12
The long-running trail race returns September 12. Even if you are not racing, expect extra activity around the park and lodging demand from runners.
Hocking County Fair — September 14–19
The county fair runs through much of the week in Logan, adding an agriculture-and-community event to a hiking trip.
Glass Pumpkin Fest — September 17–20
Jack Pine's Glass Pumpkin Fest runs September 17–20 in the Laurelville area with artists, food, live music, glass-blowing demonstrations and hands-on activities.
Ohio Pawpaw Festival — September 18–20
The regional calendar also lists the Ohio Pawpaw Festival in Albany for the same weekend, making September 18–20 especially busy across southeastern Ohio.
Hocking Hills Artists & Craftsmen Fall Show — September 26–27
The annual fall show closes out the month with local arts and crafts.
What the forest looks like
Most of September is still predominantly green. Color generally begins subtly on stressed or early-turning trees before the broad hardwood canopy changes in October. The advantage is that you can get cooler hiking weather without automatically paying peak-foliage demand.
What to pack
Bring layers. September can produce warm afternoons and much cooler gorge mornings. A rain shell and shoes with real traction remain useful because wet sandstone stays slick regardless of temperature.
Best strategy
If your goal is hiking rather than festivals, target a weekday or the gaps between major event weekends. If your goal is combining trails with local culture, September 17–20 is the most concentrated event window.
