Hocking Hills has become a destination for weddings and elopements — especially for couples who want an outdoor ceremony with a natural backdrop and a reception that feels like a weekend with friends rather than a banquet hall event. The landscape provides the scenery; you bring the people.
Ceremony Locations
Ash Cave: The most popular wedding location in the park. The 700-foot-wide horseshoe overhang creates a dramatic natural amphitheater with a 90-foot seasonal waterfall as the backdrop. The flat, paved trail makes it accessible for guests of all ages and abilities. ODNR issues permits for ceremonies in the state park — contact the park office at 740-385-6841 for current requirements and availability.
Conkle's Hollow: For hiking-capable guests, the gorge floor offers a more intimate, enclosed setting surrounded by 200-foot sandstone walls. The rim trail is too narrow and exposed for a ceremony, but the gorge floor has natural clearings.
Rock House: A unique option for a very small ceremony — the cave interior with its vaulted ceiling and natural window openings creates an atmosphere no built venue can replicate. Space limitations make this suitable for elopements or ceremonies of fewer than 20 people.
Private Property: Many larger cabin properties have outdoor ceremony areas — clearings, ridgetop overlooks, lakeside settings, or pavilions. This eliminates the need for park permits and gives you more control over timing, setup, and noise. The Hocking Hills rental market includes several properties that specifically market to weddings.
Reception Venues
Large cabins and lodge properties serve as combined ceremony-and-reception venues. Properties sleeping 20–30+ can host small weddings where the ceremony, dinner, and celebration all happen on one property. This is the most common model for Hocking Hills weddings — guests stay for the weekend, the ceremony is on the grounds, and the reception is a dinner and bonfire rather than a DJ and dance floor.
For a more traditional sit-down reception, The Lodge at Hocking College in Nelsonville offers event space and catering. A handful of local event barns and farm venues have emerged in recent years as well.
Permits and Rules
Ceremonies in Hocking Hills State Park require a Special Activity Permit from ODNR. Permits cover a specific location, date, and time. Restrictions typically include limits on group size, no stakes or anchors in the ground (the sandstone is protected), no amplified sound, and a requirement to leave the area as you found it. Apply well in advance — popular dates (October weekends, summer Saturdays) fill early.
Drone photography in the state park requires a separate FAA-approved drone permit coordinated through ODNR. Many photographers work around this by shooting drone footage on private property and traditional photography in the park.
Photography
Several Hocking Hills-based photographers specialize in outdoor weddings and elopements in the park. The golden-hour light in the gorges — especially in fall — produces stunning images. Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave bridge, and the Conkle's Hollow overlooks are the most popular photography locations. Book well in advance for October dates.
Best Seasons
Fall (October) is the most popular season — fall color provides the backdrop and the weather is comfortable. Late spring (May–June) offers wildflowers and green canopy. Summer is warm and humid but has the longest daylight hours. Winter elopements with snow in the gorges are dramatic and uncrowded.
