One day in Hocking Hills is a taste. A weekend is the full experience. Here's a Friday-to-Sunday itinerary that balances hiking, dining, and downtime without burning you out.

Friday: Arrive and Settle In

Late Afternoon: Check into your cabin. Unpack, explore the property, find the hot tub controls, stock the kitchen if you brought groceries. Most cabin check-ins are between 3-4 PM.

Evening: Drive to 58 West in downtown Logan for dinner — restaurant, winery, brewery, and distillery under one roof. Or try Kindred Spirits at the Inn at Cedar Falls if you booked a reservation (do this in advance). After dinner, if skies are clear and it's a Friday, head to the John Glenn Astronomy Park for the stargazing program (starts 30 min after sunset; free parking pass required from registration.jgap.org).

Alternative: Skip the restaurant. Light the fire pit, grill at the cabin, crack open a local bottle from Hocking Hills Winery, and call it an early night. You'll want the energy tomorrow.

Saturday: The Big Day

7:30 AM: Early start. Coffee at the cabin or grab-and-go from Hocking Hills Coffee Emporium near the park.

8:00 AM — Ash Cave: Start with the easiest and most dramatic trail. Paved, flat, 40 minutes round trip. The cave is jaw-dropping and you'll have it nearly to yourself at this hour.

9:00 AM — Cedar Falls: 5-minute drive. Moderate half-mile trail with stairs to the park's largest waterfall. 40 minutes.

10:00 AM — Old Man's Cave: The signature hike. 60-90 minutes through the gorge. Upper Falls, Lower Falls, Devil's Bathtub, Sphinx Head. You'll arrive before the parking lot fills.

Noon — Lunch: Picnic at the Old Man's Cave picnic area (if you packed one), or drive to The Feed or Hocking Hills Diner in Logan.

2:00 PM — Choose Your Afternoon:

Option A: Conkle's Hollow Rim Trail — the best overlook in the park. 2.5 miles, 1.5 hours. Save this for the afternoon when the light is warm.

Option B: River tubing (Memorial Day-Labor Day) — 2-4 hours on the Hocking River. The perfect cooldown after morning hikes.

Option C: Winery tour — Le Petit Chevalier, Hocking Hills Winery, or Brewery 33. Tasting flights, wood-fired pizza, beer garden.

Evening: Back to the cabin. Hot tub. Fire pit. Grill or leftovers. You've earned a slow evening.

Sunday: Relaxed Finish

Morning: Sleep in. Breakfast at the cabin or at Hocking Hills Diner (breakfast all day, get the sourdough toast).

Late Morning: One final hike — pick something you missed yesterday. Rock House (45 min, the only true cave) or Cantwell Cliffs (the most challenging and least crowded, 45-75 min) both work well as a closer.

Alternative: Drive to Nelsonville. Walk the Historic Public Square, browse shops, catch a show at Stuart's Opera House if timing works, or ride the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway if it's running.

Afternoon: Pack up and head home. Check-out is typically 11 AM, so plan your morning hike accordingly.

Pacing tip: The biggest mistake people make is cramming too many trails into Saturday. Three in the morning is plenty. Save the afternoon for something different — tubing, wine, or just sitting on the cabin deck. You came here to slow down, not to speedrun a trail checklist.
