Athens, Ohio Day Trip from Hocking Hills: A Half-Day Plan

Day Trip · October 12, 2026 · 6 min read

Athens is the region's college town, a lively, walkable change of pace from cabin cooking and trail hiking. Our day-trips guide puts it about 40 minutes southeast of the central state park area, and the drive is straightforward: US-33 east through Nelsonville. A half-day is enough to see the best of it. Here is a schedule that leaves you time to get back before dark.

Pick the day before you pick the plan

Athens runs differently depending on the day, so decide this first.

The half-day schedule

Treat these times as a skeleton, not a promise. Adjust them to your drive and your pace.

Suggested flow
  • About 9:30 or 10:00 a.m.: Leave the cabin. Fill the tank and download offline directions before you lose signal on the way.
  • About 10:30: Arrive and start with a coffee and a lap of the market (Saturday) or the uptown streets (any other day).
  • About 11:30: Walk the campus edge and College Green, whose brick walkways the university's visitor page highlights in autumn.
  • About 12:30: Sit-down lunch uptown.
  • About 2:00: One bigger stop (see below).
  • By about 3:30: Start back. In late fall and winter, leave earlier so you are not driving unfamiliar hill roads after dark.

Lunch without a restaurant list

We would rather point you to current information than name places we cannot vouch for today. Athens has independent restaurants, craft beer and plenty of coffee, according to the regional tourism bureau and our own day-trips guide. For a walking-distance menu check, look at the posted menus on Court Street and the cross streets, or stop by the Athens County Visitors Bureau at 8 W. Stimson Avenue, which lists weekday hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and ask what is open that day.

If you want a beer after lunch, the bureau promotes a craft beer hall and a local cider house along the bikeway under the name Brewed on the Bikeway. Confirm hours and whether the person driving back is sober before you go, and read our tasting route guide for pacing advice.

Choosing your one bigger stop

Resist the urge to stack four attractions. Pick one.

If the weather turns

This plan works well on a wet or cold day because most of it is indoors. A wet-weather version is: Saturday market (inside in winter), lunch, then the Dairy Barn or a long bookstore browse. For more ideas when trails are closed or slick, see our rainy day guide.

Getting there and back

From the Logan area, take US-33 southeast through Nelsonville, which is a good ten-minute coffee or restroom stop on the way in or out. Parking in a college town is rarely free of rules, so read the posted signs or check the city's parking information before you walk away from the car. The Hocking Hills hill roads are winding and poorly lit after dark, and cell service can drop in the hollows, so aim to be back on familiar roads by dusk.

One more tip: do not try to schedule the day around a restaurant that closes between lunch and dinner. If you want to eat at a specific place, check the day's hours before you leave the cabin, and have a second option nearby in case there is a wait.

What to bring for a half-day

Pair it with Nelsonville

US-33 runs straight through Nelsonville, so you can make the drive part of the day. Going out, stop for a coffee or a look at the Public Square. Coming back, you can check whether Stuart's Opera House has an evening show. If you want a gentler day with less driving, do only Nelsonville and save Athens for another trip.

The bottom line

Athens works as a half-day because it is dense and walkable, with food and culture within a few blocks. Plan around one anchor (the market or one attraction), keep lunch simple, and leave by mid-afternoon. If you only have time for one town besides Logan, make it this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Athens from Hocking Hills?

Our day-trips guide estimates about 40 minutes southeast of the central state park area, by way of US-33 and Nelsonville. Your actual drive depends on where your cabin is.

What is the best day for a half-day in Athens?

Saturday morning pairs well with the Athens Farmers Market, which lists Saturday hours of 9:00 a.m. to noon year-round. Avoid football Saturdays and big college weekends if you want a calmer visit.

Can I do Athens on a rainy day?

Yes. Most of this plan is indoors, and in winter some Saturday market vendors set up inside the Athens Community Center. Check the market's social pages and any attraction's hours first.

Do I need reservations for lunch in Athens?

Usually not on a weekday, but busy weekends and university event days can fill restaurants. Call ahead for groups and check each restaurant's current hours.

Is the Dairy Barn Arts Center open every day?

We could not confirm its hours or admission on its website, so check before you drive. It is at 8000 Dairy Lane in Athens.
