When Halloween falls midweek, most people celebrate the Saturday before and treat the day itself as an afterthought. When it falls on a Saturday, the whole weekend becomes the event: Friday arrival, Saturday costumes and bonfire, Sunday recovery. That's a three-night booking for a lot of groups, and it collides with the tail end of foliage season. Expect Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31 to book like a peak-color weekend even though the color itself is past its best. If you're reading this in September, look now.
The color situation on October 31
Past peak, but not bare. By Halloween the ridges have thinned and the gorges are fading from their October 18–25 peak. What you get instead is arguably better for the holiday: a forest floor carpeted in leaves, low sun coming sideways through a half-empty canopy, fog collecting in the hollows at dawn, and rock formations that feel larger because the trees no longer hide them. The eeriest formations in the region — Rock House, the Devil's Bathtub, the recess at Ash Cave — are at their most atmospheric in exactly this light.
The clock falls back Sunday morning
Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1. Practically: you get an extra hour of sleep after the party, but sunset on Sunday jumps from 6:29 p.m. on Saturday to 5:28 p.m. Park trails close at dusk, so a Sunday afternoon hike needs to start by 3:30. Set your phone to update automatically and don't trust the cabin's microwave clock.

Hocking Halloween Campout
Hocking Hills State Park runs its Halloween campout every year on a late-October weekend: decorated campsites, hayrides, a costume parade, campground trick-or-treat, and the naturalist-led "Haunted Hocking" ghost program at Ash Cave. It's free for registered campers and cottage guests. The 2026 dates hadn't been posted as of this writing — check the park's calendar and reserve a site early if it lands on Halloween weekend.

Logan's annual downtown Halloween celebration around Worthington Park — a treat walk through participating businesses, costume contest, scavenger hunt, raffle, and dancing, typically 6 to 8 p.m. on a Saturday in late October. 2026 would be the eighth year. A three-night plan
- Friday, Oct 30: Arrive before dark (6:30 p.m.). Grocery run in Logan on the way in. Bonfire, s'mores, and the first ghost story. Order firewood delivered so it's stacked when you pull up.
- Saturday, Oct 31: Fog hike at Ash Cave or Cedar Falls first thing. Pumpkin patch or downtown Logan in the afternoon. Costumes on at dusk. Party.
- Sunday, Nov 1: Sleep in (the clock helps). Late brunch, a short walk, and an early drive home before the 5:28 sunset.
If Halloween weekend is already gone
The weekend before — October 23–25 — has better color, the Pumpkin Show, and the Hunter's Moon on Sunday night, and it's a perfectly good stand-in for a costume weekend. Midweek stays the last week of October are wide open and the atmosphere is identical on a Tuesday. And the first weekend of November, after the clocks change, is the quietest good weekend of the year.
