Hocking Hills in October 2026: Fall Color, Events & Crowd Strategy

October is Hocking Hills' busiest scenic month. Plan around 2026 events, changing foliage, cold gorge mornings and heavy weekend traffic.

October is the headline month in Hocking Hills: fall color, cooler air, huge weekend demand and some of the year's busiest trailheads. In 2026, the calendar adds several major events on top of normal leaf-peeping traffic.

October 3: Oktoberfest at Brewery 33

The official regional fall calendar lists Brewery 33's Oktoberfest for October 3 in Logan.

October 10: Grandma Gatewood's Fall Colors Hike

The 2026 Grandma Gatewood Fall Colors Hike is scheduled for October 10. The official tourism calendar describes it as a strenuous six-mile hike along the Grandma Gatewood Trail.

This is not the day to arrive casually at Old Man's Cave expecting an empty parking lot.

October 31: Jack O' Lantern Jubilee

Downtown Logan's Jack O' Lantern Jubilee is scheduled for Halloween, October 31, with tricks and treats on downtown streets.

When will peak color happen?

No one can accurately promise peak foliage months in advance. The site's broader fall guide notes that the second and third weeks of October are often the strongest window, but weather can move that timing earlier or later.

Use live foliage reports close to the trip rather than choosing lodging based on a guaranteed “peak weekend.”

Crowd strategy

  • Arrive at the most popular trailheads early.
  • Prefer weekdays if possible.
  • Visit Rock House, Cantwell Cliffs and other distributed areas rather than spending the entire trip around Old Man's Cave.
  • Do groceries before entering the park corridor.
  • Download directions before losing service.

October weather

Plan for layers. Gorge bottoms can feel substantially cooler than sunny parking areas, and fallen wet leaves can hide slick sandstone and roots.

October is worth it — if you plan around the demand

The colors are genuinely spectacular. The mistake is expecting solitude at noon on a Saturday in the middle of the month. Build the trip around early starts, weekdays and less-famous areas and October becomes much more enjoyable.
